A closer look at the purpose and function of a visitor visa

Each year, the United States is the destination for thousands of immigrants seeking new opportunities, better quality of life and an escape from the turmoil they may have experienced in their homeland. While immigration, naturalization and acquiring citizenship may appear overwhelming at first thought, there are options for people seeking potential citizenship that allow temporary opportunity leading up to full citizenship in Illinois.

According to U.S. Visas, the purpose of a visitor visa is to allow individuals the opportunity to enter the United States temporarily for a variety of reasons including the following:

  • Business endeavors
  • Schooling
  • Tourism
  • Pleasure or visiting

Interested persons must first fill out an online application where they will be required to provide a variety of important information including their reason for wanting to enter the U.S. Next, they will need to schedule an interview which often takes place at the U.S. Embassy location within that person’s country of residence. Preparation for the interview requires the payment of a fee and the gathering of important documents which the interviewer will need. These documents include the following:

  • Receipt from application fee
  • Passport
  • Application
  • Photo

Interviewers may also require additional information about a person’s intent and how he or she will be funding his or her trip to the U.S. After attending their interview, interested persons will be notified of whether or not they are eligible for a visa. From here, they have the option to extend their stay or make changes to the status of their visa after receiving the required approval.

The International Business Times reports that an impressive 42.1 million people were immigrants in the United States in the year 2015.
