When Your Success Depends On Effective Immigration Services

How to help your child adjust to moving to another country

No matter the situation, growing up will always present challenges. However, children who immigrate to another country will face unique obstacles. Understanding these trials is an important part of helping your children benefit as much as possible from your move.

Forming identity

Adults, for the most part, have already formed their personal identity. Children, however, are still going through this process. Moving to another country may present unique trials for this process.

One of the biggest challenges that immigrant children face is constructing a mixed identity. Children may feel caught between two cultural identities and feel an inherent “otherness” both to their peers and family.

How you can help

Immigrant parents can help their children with this process. Here are some things you can do to help your children with the move:

  • Talk with your children about challenges they are facing and encourage them to communicate.
  • Adapt your rules and boundaries to accommodate both cultures your child experiences.
  • Engage positively with your children about their culture(s). You can do this both by encouraging them to engage with your home culture, and by learning more about the new culture you live in.

Immigrating to a new country is not an easy decision. As a parent, you want to provide the best for your children. Being aware of the challenges that they will face in a new country can help you make sure your move is as positive as possible for your entire family.
